City of Vancouver- Development is defined in the Vancouver Charter as “a change in the use of any land or building, or the carrying-out of any construction, engineering or other operations in, on, over, or under land, or land covered by water.” Development Services administers a variety of land development, building, and building trades regulations, and assists you – the general public, industry professionals, and job seekers with permitting your dreams within the City.
City of Toronto- A Building Permit is your formal permission from the City of Toronto to begin construction, demolition, addition or renovation on your property. Toronto Building staff must review your plans to ensure that they comply with the Ontario Building Code, local Zoning By-laws, and other applicable regulations.
City of Hamilton- A Building Permit gives you the legal authorization to start construction of a building project in accordance with approved drawings and specifications. Building Permits are issued by the Building Services Division and are reviewed for compliance with the Ontario Building Code, the applicable municipal Zoning By-Law and other applicable provincial and municipal regulations. Building Permits are necessary to ensure that zoning requirements, fire and structural safety standards, and other building standards are met. City of Halifax- Permits for various types of activities including new construction and renovations, as well as multiple unite residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings are required in accordance with HRM By-Law B-201. Construction Permits are issued following a staff review of an application
City of Calgary- The Building Regulations Division is the group responsible for examining plans, issuing permits and performing inspections for new construction and for renovations in the city of Calgary. Building Regulations is divided into the various construction disciplines of Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing & Gas and Building. The Building discipline is further subdivided into Residential and Commercial Branches. Residential Plans Examiners deal with single and two family dwellings and any renovations you may have in mind such as, basement developments, detached garages, retaining walls on private property, etc. Commercial Plans Examiners deal with all other buildings including everything from shopping malls, churches, warehouses and institutions to industrial uses like factories, power plants, etc.
City of Victoria- Plans submitted for the building permit application are required to be "designer" quality. The following information details the specific plan requirements for your application. This list of requirements is not all encompassing. Additional information may be requested during the building permit application process.
City of Regina- You require a permit from the City of Regina if you wish to construct, demolish, build an addition or renovate buildings on your property. The permit allows City of Regina staff to review your plans to ensure they comply with all current building codes, bylaws and other applicable regulations. Either you, your contractor or your builder may apply for a permit, however, as the building’s owner, you are responsible for complying with all building requirements.
City of St.John's- Building Permits are required for all new construction and extensions, additions, structural changes, floor layout changes and relocation of existing buildings and occupancy changes within the City of St. John’s. Permits must be obtained prior to the start of any of these activities and regardless of who is carrying out the work for you, it is the owners responsibility to ensure a permit is in place.
City of Saskatoon- You require a permit in order to construct, demolish, or renovate buildings on your property. As part of the application process, the Building Standards Branch will review your plans to ensure compliance with the above regulations.
City of Lethbridge- Before beginning construction on most developments, the Inspection Services Department requires that a residential or commercial building permit be obtained.

City of Kelowna- The Inspection Services Division is responsible for administering Building Permits and Plumbing and Heating Permits.
City of Kamloops- The Building Inspection Division is responsible for implementing Council-adopted by-laws and policies through residential and commercial building plan reviews, and building and plumbing inspection services.
City of Edmonton- Building permit application process: 1. Bring in your completed application form. The Commercial Development and Building Application Form is available on the website at www.edmonton.ca/pdd/form 2. Payment of all applicable permit fees:
- building,
- plumbing & gas,
- heating & ventilation, and
- electrical.
3. The general contractor is required to pre-pay these fees so that the sub-trades can register their permits.
4. A technical advisor will pre-screen your application for completeness. Incomplete
City of Fredericton- All applicants are encouraged to contact the Building Inspection Coordinator, to discuss project details and to determine required documentation/plans prior to making application for a Building Permit.
City of London- We are pleased to announce that registered home builders can now apply online for permits to build new homes and to submit CAD drawings along with their permit applications. Our Plans Examiners will review the house plans using their computers, red-line any revisions required and, once the plan review is complete, notify the home builder when the permit is ready to be issued. Home builders can pay their permit fees on line using their financial service providers online banking services.
City of Winnipeg-A building permit is a municipal document from the City of Winnipeg that provides legal authorization to begin construction of a building project. The Zoning and Permits Branch within the Planning, Property and Development Department is the legal municipal authority for issuing permits in the City of Winnipeg.
City of Ottawa- The Ontario Building Code Act requires that, as a homeowner, you obtain a building permit prior to commencing construction. It is unlawful to start construction or demolition before you get a permit
